Five Fingered Tongue Punch - A Midweek Ride to Pizza

"Do you like my new shoes, Lucky?"
"Yes, Triumph, they're very nice."

By rights, it ought to be cold out, and probably raining. Maybe threatening snow. Instead, it is in the upper 70's.

The only thing to do, then, is to get my bike out and ride it like I'm getting away with something. Because I am.

So the other day, I was on the Triumph and riding seconds after getting home from work. Of course, that means I needed to get something to eat, and if I'm riding, need something to eat, and have a bit of time, the obvious choice is going to be pizza.

And by chance, I happened to spot this place called Punch.

Punch serves wood-fired Neapolitan pizza.  So, no, it's not a proper Middle Coast pizza, but it's a damn fine substitute.

From here, that oven is kind of anthropomorphic, isn't it?
I half expect it to start explaining the difference between "cold" and "hot"

The oven, for obvious reasons, dominates the restaurant. That baby cooks pizzas at 800 degrees Fahrenheit, meaning the pizzas are done in 90 seconds. Which, by the way, is about how long I can bear to wait, so that's a good thing. By the time I had my beverage and was somewhat situated at a table, my pizza was ready.

A brief aside - I want an oven at home that will have my pizza ready in 90 seconds.

I might have to go back tonight.

So, you're probably wondering how the pizza is. In short, it's good. On a pizza this simple, every element has to be right. The crust, sauce, and cheese all have to be perfect. This was pretty darned close to ideal. The crust is crunchy on the outside, and chewy on the inside. The cheese is perfect. The sauce is perfect. And they didn't overload it with basil. Nice. I'll be back.

The ride, on the other hand, was kind of a nightmare of typical rush hour pushiness and assholery. But, the weather was perfect in early October, and I was on my bike, so I'm not going to complain.

I can't believe you ate the whole thing ! or did you ?

I also can't help but think how much wood is burned, keeping that pizza oven at over 800° all the time just waiting for customers to come in. The same with kitchen grills in a restaurant being on at full power all day from morning to night, just in case someone orders something that needs to be cooked

Bob Skoot - The photo makes it look bigger than it was. The whole thing was the size of a dinner plate, and very thin.

I would be curious to know how much wood they use in a day as well.

Richard M - Simple is good.

Coop - Yeah, give them a whirl!

Man that crust looks good.

The pizza oven is quite the sight too, it looks angry.

mq01 - Come visit sometime, I'll bring you on a middle coast pizza tasting tour. :)

Trobairitz - It is good! Personally, I think the oven looks kind of shocked/sad. Like it's thinking, "Hey! That was mine, come back!"
